What is the Purpose of Bone and Gum Grafting?

Bone and gum grafting rebuild the jawbone and gum tissue. A patient who suffers from periodontal disease may require this procedure before restorative dental treatments can be conducted.

Bone Grafting Near You

If a patient has been missing one or multiple teeth for a while, it is likely that a breakdown of the jaw bone has occurred. A breakdown of the jaw bone can be a result of:

  • Infection
  • Facial trauma
  • Growth deformity
  • Periodontal disease
  • Untreated cavities

In order to support dental implants, a patient must have sufficient bone length and width. Grafting is performed with bone tissue taken from healthy areas of the body or from a donor source. The donor’s bone is grafted (placed) onto the affected area of the jaw. Throughout time, it will fuse with the existing bone and the cells will function to create adequate tissue to support dental implants. We provide bone and gum grafting in Naples, FL

How is Bone Harvested?

A patient can have a piece removed from their chin to complete the graft. To expose the chin, an incision is created in the gum line and a piece is removed, as well as the bone marrow. This area is filled with bone graft material and the incision is closed using stitches. The area that requires grafting will be exposed and the graft will be inserted and secured using titanium screws.

Gum Grafting in Naples, FL

Patients with gum disease can experience gum recession which exposes the roots of the teeth and nerves. This can cause patients to experience sensitivity to temperature (heat and cold) and can negatively impact the appearance of the teeth. In addition, it can cause gum breakdown over time, if a patient has naturally thin gum tissues.

How is Gum Grafting Performed?

During treatment, a small section of tissue is removed from the inside of the mouth, or the roof of the mouth and is layered over the damaged areas of the gum.

There are 3 types of gum grafts, these include:

      1.  Connective Tissue Graft: This can be performed if there is a large area of roof exposure.

      2. Gingival Graft: This can be performed if a patient has thin gum tissue.

      3. Pedicle Graft: This can be performed if a patient’s gums have receded but are still overall healthy.
